National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme (NSS), Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research has been functioning since 2014 through its 6 NSS Units with nearly 700 NSS volunteers. 

The NSS is actively engaged in implementing community projects on Health Care, Sanitation and Environmental Protection under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India. The NSS at SRIHER has adopted 11 villages including Karunakarachery, Annambedu Vayalanallur, Banaveduthottam, Kolappanchery, Kavalcherry, Kannapalayam, Padur, Thirumanam, Parivakkam and Sorancherry in Poonamallee Block of Thiruvallur District. 

Dr. M. Anitha Rani, Professor, Department of Community Medicine is the Coordinator for the NSS activities at SRIHER, with support from six Program Officers and Associate NSS Coordinator.  

 A few current NSS activities include the following: 

  • Health awareness session – Menstrual hygiene, drug de addiction, healthy diet, Anemia prevention, sleep hygiene, etc      
  • Health camps in schools and community – Paediatrician, Dermatologist, ENT, Dental, Hearing assessment and Eye check up
  • Project VOICE-Voluntary Outreach Initiative for creative English to rural children- spoken english teaching sessions – monthly two sessions-two hours/session. Lesson plan prepared by faculties from the English Department.
  • Regular yoga coaching- monthly two sessions-two hours/session
  • Donation of books / setting up of library in government schools
  • Building awareness of plastic ban – Essay/ poster competitions among students
  • Youth Day celebrations in Schools – Essay/ Elocution/ Poster competitions among students on Teachings of Swami Vivekananda- Winners are awarded prizes
  • Tree plantation drive
  •  Pond restoration program
  •  Physical fitness programme for women
  • Wall painting on hand washing and water conservation 
  • Mosquito breeding sites removal campaign 
  • Eye camp 
  • Distribution of dustbins in adopted villages and educating them on waste segregation    
  • Other programs as per instructions from NSS regional direct
