In India, 58% of mothers do not breastfeed their newborns within the first hour of birth, which is crucial for the child’s health. Dr. Srinivasan, Director of the National Health Mission, highlighted this issue during an event held at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai, as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

He stated that breastfeeding within the first hour reduces risks of infections, diseases, and child mortality. However, due to various factors, including lack of awareness and healthcare access, many mothers delay breastfeeding. He emphasized the need for increased awareness and education about the importance of early breastfeeding.

The event was organized by the Department of Paediatrics, Neonatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology at Sri Ramachandra Institute, where various health experts and dignitaries participated.
