A comparative study of efficiency of visual examination, smartphone photography and radiovisiography in diagnosis of occlusal caries

Guide for chancellor summer research project

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions. While visual examination is the most accepted method of diagnosing occlusal caries, it doesn’t allow for maintenance of records of the basis of diagnosis. Radiovisiography is a recent advancement in recording of images of teeth and it is advantageous as opposed to other radiographic methods as patients are exposed to lower radiation doses using this method. Another method of recording occlusal caries is smartphone photography. Using smartphone photography to assess and record images of the progress of dental caries can facilitate long distance education and also allow for quick transfer of records amongst dental specialists.  The purpose of this study is to compare the efficiency of radiovisiography and smartphone photography to that of visual examination. The objective is to find the best method of assessment and maintenance of physical/digital record of evidence of the presence of caries.
