Alcohol is strongly associated with a wide range of mental health problems. Depression, anxiety and self-harm are commonly associated with excessive alcohol consumption.  World Health Organization (WHO) reported that  the highest increase in alcohol consumption is expected in South-East Asia, with an increase of 2.2 litres in India alone, from 2005 to 2016.More than 3 million people died as a result of harmful use of alcohol in 2016. Henrion, R. (2002). Presented a 7-step logoanalysis protocol for alcohol dependence disorders. The use of logotherapy with military veterans diagnosed with alcoholism is also discussed. The program is composed of 3 phases: didactic content, realistic and workable exercises, and logo-psychotherapeutic sessions. Sessions are scheduled for 1.5 hrs, twice weekly, for 4 wks. The 7 steps of the logoanalysis protocol consist of the following clinical interventions: choosing a view of life, loss and grief, developing self-confidence, creative thinking, initiating meaningful encounters, dereflection, and commitment.  Hong ,F.(2002) found that Serum IL-6 levels were significantly elevated in chronic ethanol feeding mice.  Bradsaw, S.D(2017) said that  Levels of hope positively correlated with activation in the right dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) in response to alcohol cues. This finding was unique to alcohol cues. The study title was Effectiveness of Logo-therapy on Bio-Psycho-Social parameters in patients with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome admitted in Psychiatric Ward. The objectives of the study were assess the depression, anxiety and hope among patients with Alcohol dependence syndrome between the study and the control during pretest , Identify the  Interleukin-6   value between the study and the control groups during pretest, Implement the intervention in eight sessions with each of 45 minutes duration in the  study group, assess the level of  depression, anxiety and hope among patients with Alcohol dependence syndrome syndrome between the study and the control during post test, Identify the Interleukin-6  value between the study and the control groups during post test and Prepare pamphlet on logo therapy for patients with alcohol dependence.   The design was Quasi experimental design.

Assessment of occupational stress and its impact on Salivary Cortisol and Resilience among Nurses working in selected tertiary care Hospitals. Occupational stress is one of the most important factors in physical and psychological complications in personnel and reduction of the productivity of organizations   (Bartlett, et al. 2016). Resilience is the ability of successful adaptation to threatening conditions (Deldar, et al. 2018). Morning salivary cortisol concentration is better correlated with professional stress scale and the result raises the possibility of using a single morning salivary cortisol sample to reflect self-perceived stress (Yang. Y. ,et al.2002). Female nurses with a high level of education ,position and no night shifts had high resilience(Ren, et al. 2018).Excessive working pressure, lack of personal protective equipment, extensive media coverage, lack of pharmacotherapy, and lack of adequate support are all factors that impose an increasing psychological burden on health care workers, especially nurses, so that they show symptoms such as depression, insomnia, anxiety  and severe stress ( Kim., 2018). The objectives of the study were Assess the Nurse’s occupational stressor  and Resilience among nursing personnel working in the selected tertiary hospitals, Estimate the stress through salivary cortisol of nursing personnel working in the selected tertiary hospitals Correlate the occupational stress with level of cortisol and resilience among nurses, Associate the level of cortisol and resilience with selected demographic variables and Identify the factors influencing the level of stress among nursing personnel working in the selected tertiary hospitals. The research design a quantitative cross-sectional survey method. The present study will  identify the nurses stress level with biomarker  using nurses’ occupation stress tool and to know their  the level of resilience will help them to adapt in the difficult situation and provide quality patient care. Nurses can challenge the demands in health care settings and improve the work productivity.

Organized National Psychiatric Nursing Conference With the theme of "Elderly Depression" by the Department of Psychiatric Nursing at SRU with the support of ICMR Grant

Blending cure with care “Elderly Depression”: An Holistic Perspective

In modern society, enforced retirement may act to power the older people. The elderly are viewed as less energetic and less valuable by potential employers. This attitude serves as a social divide between the young and old and can prevent older men and women from fully participating in social, political, economic, cultural, spiritual, civic and other activities .These factors make the elderly more prone to psychological problems. Even though depression is the commonest psychiatric disorder in the elderly, it is often misdiagnosed and under-treated. People with depression suffer from impairment of all major areas of functioning, for instance, personal care, family responsibilities, and social, occupational capabilities. Elderly people tend to be less healthy physically, and are more socially withdrawn. They are less satisfied with the manner in which they handle their problems and social life . People with depression suffer overly from various medical disorders and die prematurely. Let us join our hands together in controlling at least not curbing this menace which has actually taken the form of an epidemic in our country. We would like to empower and enlighten the nurses and nursing students of India regarding this area of mental health which go severely unnoticed in our country so as to make our country a better place to dwell for the elderly people. Need of the hour is to develop a proactive approach in mass detection of such cases in the community and provide them care with a humane touch of love and affection. Holism needs to be practiced in actions and deeds and just not merely limited to paper work and lip service !
