Dr. Sowmya is a renowned  professor in the field of Biochemistry, boasting over 18 years of rich expertise. As the Head of the Biochemistry Department, Dr. K.Sowmya oversees various academic and administrative functions, ensuring the smooth functioning of the department. She has been instrumental in setting up the systems operational in the department of biochemistry for innovative teaching learning methods, training programs/ workshops & research 

At the helm of the Biochemistry Department, Dr. Sowmya orchestrates a myriad of academic and administrative functions, ensuring seamless departmental operations. Key responsibilities under her purview include:

• Curriculum Development: Spearheading the design and periodic updating of the curriculum to harmonize with the latest advancements in Biochemistry.
• Faculty Management: Diligently training and mentoring faculty members to uphold exemplary teaching standards.
• Student Guidance: Extending steadfast guidance and support to students in their academic pursuits and research endeavors.

In her role as Associate Laboratory Director, Dr. Sowmya shoulders the following responsibilities:

• Collaborating in the formulation and execution of laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Ensuring strict adherence to regulatory requisites and accreditation standards Overseeing robust quality assurance initiatives and proficiency testing endeavors.
• Providing effective leadership and direction to laboratory personnel.
• Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to bolster patient care and drive forward clinical research endeavors.

She has completed the basic course in medical education, Advanced Course in Medical Education and was part of many workshops organized by the medical education unit. She is passionate about medical education.Within the ambit of the Department of Medical Education, Dr. Sowmya has been instrumental in organizing and conducting various faculty development programs for both in-house faculty members and for the faculties from medical colleges under the nodal center SRMC & RI. She upholds the responsibility of Phase1 Director and Early clinical exposure Committee convener 

1. The study of Serum Biomarkers and genetic markers of Renal Impairment in individuals with Type II Diabetes Mellitus
2. Serum B cell maturation antigen levels in multiple myeloma patients as a non-invasive biomarker
3. A comparison of the maternal levels of serum proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) in pregnant women with the risk of fetal neural tube defects
4. To study role of PCSK9 as a diagnostic marker in women with risk of neural tube defects
5. Evaluation of different formulate for LDL-C estimation in a South Indian Population
