Academics: Dr. Mukhopadhyay obtained his doctoral degree in Nuclear & Analytical Chemistry from the University of Burdwan (BU), West Bengal in January 2002.
He joined SRIHER (Chennai) in March 2006 and since then has been teaching in various academic programmes like MPH (OEH), MSc (IH&S), BEHS (Hons), AFIH and other UG and PG programmes/certificate courses of the university. He has been associated to a WHO consultancy activity for the BPH curriculum development on “Environmental Health and Climate Change” for Royal Institute of Health Sciences, Bhutan in 2013. He is an approved tutor of the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), United Kingdom (UK) and is an approved faculty member of British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) course (UK) as conducted by nayati International, Hyderabad. He is an Academic Counselo of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, India and has written book chapters for their PGDEOH-IGNOU course
Industry service: He has been rendering his service for last 2 decades in the field of industrial hygiene and are engaged in promoting green workplace environment for a number of organized and unorganized industrial sectors of the country. His service includes: Novar India Ltd,/ MK Electricals; INEL India Ltd.; 3 M Electro & Communication India Pvt. Ltd.; Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd.; Brakes India Ltd.; Delphi-TVS.; Shasun Chemical.; Ford India; Nokia; Toyota and Kirloskar Motor Company; Apollo Tyres Limited; Asian paints; Mars India Limited; Hyundai Motors etc. are a few among them.
Research: His doctoral researches were based on production & separation of S- & P-radionuclides by LLX methods and were conducted in various lab facilities in BU, SINP-VECC (Kolkata) and BARC-TIFR (Mumbai), India. After PhD degree, he served as a project scientist in WBPCB-IWMED and worked on municipal solid wastes in West Bengal, India. Afterward, he worked at ROHC (E), ICMR (Govt. of India), Kolkata in two WHO projects on air pollution, arsenic exposure and health from March 2002 to Feb 2006.
He has been trained in monitoring & analyses of Environmental & Occupational Health Research components at NIOH, Johanesburg, South Africa (2008); University of Brescia, Italy (2008) and University of California, Berkeley, USA (2011). Being National Coordinator (Temporary Advisor) of WHO-UNEP Mercury –Biomonitoring study in India, he was trained in Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia for conducting research related to Minamata Convention. His contributions to this study made him a WHO Panelist of the Roundtable Discussion in the International Science Congress at Bangkok, Thailand (2016). He was also invited as a sole Indian representative to present the India-report on ‘Hg-HBM’ in Rome, Italy (2018) and also delivered a technical presentation on the Hg-HBM project outcomes in a special meeting on “Mercury exposure among Indian vulnerable population” at Geneva, Switzerland (2017) as organized by the UNEP-WHO-CNR (Italy), just before India’s first COP after ratifying Minamata Convention. Recently, he participated and presented his speech in NIHR-CADA workshop in Brawijaya University, Malang, Indonesia (2023). He has delivered number of poster and oral presentations in various conferences in the country and abroad.
He has been associated to more than 15 National and International projects on Environmental and Occupational Health where IDRC funded Stone Crushing units; ICMR-CAR funded TAPHE, NIH funded STAR, WHO-UNEP Hg-HBM, NIH-USA funded HAPIN, USEFI funded Obama-Singh (Indo-US) knowledge initiative, ICMR-Air toxic projects, NIHR-NCD (UK) project etc. are a few among them. He has more than 90 (ninety) publications in the journals of repute and in national / international conferences. He is a reviewer of a number of national and international journals and is also the co-author of some technical manuals related to environmental & occupational health. He has already guided and supervised the dissertation projects of 50 PG, UG and AFIH students thus far.
He has been the guide of four PhD students thus far in the areas like – pesticides & diabetes, ventilation index for household microenvironments, influences of volatile organic compounds exposures on respiratory health of children, pharmaceutical drugs & policy etc. In addition, a postdoc student completed his ICMR research associate scholarship in the domain of environmental health & ventilation in West Bengal under his direct guidance and supervision.
