Dr. Sheela Ravinder is a medical physiologist with extensive experience in teaching and research. She obtained her MBBS from Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai (1991), followed by a Diploma in Family Health (2002), MD in Physiology (2007), and Ph.D. in Medicine (2023) from Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER).
She joined the Department of Physiology at SRIHER in 2004 and has since contributed to medical education in various capacities. Currently an Associate Professor, she coordinates the I MBBS program and plays an active role in curriculum planning as a member of the Medical Education Unit, UG Curriculum Committee, and NMC Committee. She has also served as the Editor of Bridges, the official university newsletter.
Her research interests span public health, environmental health, respiratory physiology, and yoga. She has worked on diverse projects, including studies on vitamin D deficiency in different populations, maternal and adolescent health, bone mineral density, and respiratory illnesses. She was the field coordinator for an ICMR-funded project on health impacts of ozone and fine particle exposure in Chennai. Her doctoral work focused on vitamin D status across varied populations.
Dr. Ravinder has presented her research at national and international conferences and published widely in peer-reviewed journals. Her contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the GATE Award (2014) for her work on vitamin D among adolescents and young adults, and best paper prizes at scientific meetings. She has also mentored numerous student research projects funded by ICMR and the Chancellor’s Summer Research Fellowship.
She is a life member of professional bodies such as the Association of Physiologists & Pharmacologists of India, Indian Medical Association, Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu, and Women Doctors Association. Her academic journey reflects a commitment to advancing physiology education, fostering student research, and addressing public health challenges through evidence-based science.

Dr Sheela the 1stBest paper award for the paper titled ‘Fibrinogen as a CAD risk factor in younger age group in suburban Chennai” in the first state annual conference of the Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu (APT) at Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital, Chennai on 6 & 7 oct 07. She also won the Best Mentor Award for motivating students to present the maximum number of models & winning a prize in the model competition at the state level Intercollegiate Quiz program and model exhibition program on 19th March 2012 conducted at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai.
