Dr.R.C.Perumal is currently an Professor and Head of Dept. of Speech Language Pathology in the Faculty of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (FASLP) at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Deemed to be University, Chennai with 22 years of professional experience in the field of Speech and Language Pathology. He completed his Post-graduation at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore & Under graduation and Doctorate at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (DU), Chennai.
Dr. Perumal’s clinical interests include Autism Spectrum Disorders, Social communication disorders, Aphasia and Dementia. He is currently the Co-ordinator of Speech and Language clinical services of Karthikeyan child development unit at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre. He is also a team member of Sri Ramachandra Integrated Movement Disorder clinic. He has served as resource persons and delivered lectures/scientific presentations in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Aphasia in state and national conferences.
Dr.Perumal’s research focus includes, Establishment of bio markers for identification of children with autism through wireless cap EEG. This research was undertaken as an inter institutional collaborative project with School of Electronics Engineering, Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai. He is also interested in identification of appropriate stimulation frequency for enhancement of the quality of speech in individuals with Parkinson’s disease who have undergone Deep Brain Stimulation surgical procedure.This project was carried out through an inter departmental collaborative project with Dept. of Neurosurgery at SRIHER. Dr.Perumal has undertaken researches in adaptations and validations of aphasia assessment tools in Tamil language. Dr. Perumal is also curious in exploring the impact of communication difficulty on quality of life in individuals with neuro communication disorders.
Dr.Perumal’s doctoral work was on estimating speech sound acquisition and development of phonological processes in Tamil speaking children between 2 and 5 years. He has plans of expanding his doctoral research aiming at development of a standardised screening and diagnostic tool in Tamil for speech sound disorders. He is a recognized Ph D research supervisor of the university and has guided several master dissertations. He is serving as reviewer of scientific research articles for national and international journals related to Speech and Language. He has published scientific research articles in national and international journals in areas of clinical phonology and Aphasia. He has also served as resource person in state and national conferences in areas of Social communication Disorder, Autism and Aphasia.
Dr.Perumal has served as office bearer in Indian Speech and Hearing Association -Tamil Nadu and is a Life member of the Indian Speech and Hearing Association. He is a recognized visiting expert nominated by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) for assessment of Speech Language and Hearing training programs in the country.
