Dr. R. Chandru is a medical professional with a comprehensive background in both clinical practice and academic contributions. He graduated with a medical degree from Dr. MGR Medical University in 2008, followed by an M.S. degree in General Surgery from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal University in 2011. His career commenced at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in May 2011, an institution consistently ranked among the top 10 medical colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF-2018).
Currently, Dr. Chandru serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute. Additionally, he holds the positions of Assistant Dean of Students and Undergraduate Registrar for the Department of Surgery. With 13 years of teaching experience, Dr. Chandru has mentored undergraduate students in M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.P.T., and B.Sc Nursing programs, as well as postgraduate students pursuing M.S. degrees in General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, and MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Chandru has a specialized interest in laparoscopic surgeries and has continually advanced his skills in this area. He actively participates in the training of postgraduate students in both general and laparoscopic surgeries and has performed numerous open surgeries for various benign and malignant conditions. His expertise extends to performing lifesaving trauma surgeries and managing post-operative patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) management. .He is an expert in all Laparoscopic surgeries including hernia repair ,gall stones ,breast surgeries ,thyroid surgeries ,abdominal masses and bowel surgeries.
In addition to his clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Chandru has been guiding postgraduate students in their dissertation topics and has facilitated paper and poster presentations for the past two years. He has organized and conducted clinical skill lab classes and coordinated interdepartmental academic activities, including surgical pathology meetings for postgraduate students. Dr. Chandru has contributed to academic literature with four case report publications in the college journal and two research articles in international journals. He has also presented papers at both national and international conferences.
Dr. Chandru’s commitment to public health is demonstrated through his involvement in public camps, including the Air Crash Squad at Mangalore Airport in 2010 and the flood relief campaign at Chemmanchery in 2015. He was a member of the Medical Records and Clinical Audit Committees of the hospital and has also served in the Hospital Quality Assurance Division.
