Dr. G. Sudhir is a renowned figure in Orthopaedic Spine surgery, known for his commitment to advancing patient care, education, and research. Serving as the Senior Consultant Ortho Spine Surgeon and Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he embodies excellence in his field.
Dr. Sudhir’s educational journey began with an MBBS degree, followed by specialization in Orthopaedics, culminating in a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Orthopaedics from Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore with All India first rank and Dr Balusankaran Gold Medal. He further enhanced his expertise through a Fellowship in Spine Surgery (FNB), the only recognised degree for Spine Surgery in the country from Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi and also earned recognition as a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (M.N.A.M.S.). He further pursued his training in Spine deformities in UK and USA. He also gained experience in Minimally invasive Spine Surgery and Endoscopic Spine Surgery by getting trained in Germany and South Korea. This dedication to lifelong learning enables him to remain at the forefront of advancements in Spine Surgery.
In his current role, Dr. Sudhir not only treats a diverse range of spinal disorders but also educates the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. His mentorship fosters a culture of inquiry and innovation among residents and fellows, emphasizing the importance of both clinical and academic excellence. His clinical practice incorporates cutting-edge techniques, particularly in minimally invasive surgery, which enhances patient outcomes.
Dr. Sudhir’s contributions to the field have garnered numerous accolades. He is an AO SPine International Faculty and teaching faculty of various National and International forums. Among his honors are the Best Innovation Award of the year by the Minimally Invasive Spine Society of India, SERB CRG Award from the Government of India in 2023 and several Gold medals and awards including International Research Award at the International Korean Spine Society Annual Conference, Seoul, South Korea, from the Indian Orthopaedic Association and Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association, including the President’s Appreciation Award and the Prof. Ramanathan Gold Medal for Consultants. His achievements in research are highlighted by the AO Spine Startup Research Grant Award in 2021 and the AO Spine Asia Pacific Research Grant Award in 2017. He has also received patent for his innovative product development in Spine Surgery.
He has held influential positions within various professional organizations, including serving as an AO Spine Asia Pacific Delegate Council Member from 2019 to 2021, Executive Committee member of Association of Spine Surgeons of India, and co-chair of the Indian Spine Journal Committee. As an Executive Committee Member of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI), he plays a vital role in shaping spine surgery practices in India. His editorial responsibilities, including being the Editor for the Madras Orthopaedic Society and Associate Editor for both the Indian Spine Journal and the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics, reflect his commitment to academic rigor and quality research.
Dr. Sudhir has successfully secured approximately ₹3.25 crore in research grants, facilitating groundbreaking studies in spine surgery. His academic contributions are significant and widespread starting from molecular studies to clinical and biomechanical studies; he has authored two textbooks and contributed over ten chapters to national and international textbooks. With numerous publications in PubMed-indexed journals, he actively shares his research findings with the global medical community. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Neurosciences.
His clinical interests lie in spinal deformities, minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), and endoscopic spine procedures, where he integrates innovative techniques into practice to improve patient care. He is one among the few in the country to perform complex and unique Endoscopic Spine Surgeries. Also he is one among the few in the state to deal with Spine deformities like Scoliosis and Kyphosis. Additionally, Dr. Sudhir engages with the community and various organizations, serving as an honorary visiting faculty member at SSN College of Engineering in Chennai and consulting for HCL Technologies.
