Resection vs retraction of strap muscles during thyroidectomy: Impact on stroboscopy and acoustic parameters of voice

During thyroidectomy, adequate access to superior pole is necessary for proper visualisation of external branch of superior laryngeal nerve (SLN), parathyroids and recurrent laryngeal nerve. This can be achieved by resection or retraction of infrahyoid strap muscles especially sternothyroid(1). Strap muscle resection versus preservation is long debated, as strap muscles play a significant role in elevation of larynx, a crucial step for swallowing and increases the vocal pitch during phonation. Strap muscle resection has been effective in identification of SLN and ligation of superior pole of thyroid. Studies in past have reported nothing to mild difference in voice outcomes after performing strap muscle division in thyroidectomy. However, most of these studies are based on subjective parameters and lack supportive objective evidence. With acoustic analysis, aerodynamic measures and videostroboscopy widely available, objective evaluation of voice with these investigations are more reliable especially in detecting subtle changes like voice range, shimmer, jitter etc. No studies are available in literature which have analysed the stroboscopic parameters after strap muscle resection in thyroidectomy. This study is designed to evaluate objective outcomes following strap muscle resection in thyroid surgeries.
