The Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine” was founded on 12th May 1972.
The main aims and objectives of IAFM are:
1. To encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and promote the progress of Forensic Medicine.
2. To highlight the importance and raise the standard of medico legal work in relation to administration of justice.
3. To co-operate with other scientific associations.
4. To encourage and publish important research in all branches of Forensic Medicine.

The Erstwhile Indian Standards Institution (now Bureau of Indian Standards) was established in the year 1947 with the objective of harmonious development of standardization activity in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) was established under the BIS Act, 1986 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Indian Standards are formulated through specialist technical committees (functioning under the Division Councils) namely, Sectional Committees which may be supported by other technical committees like subcommittees and panels set up to deal with specific group of subjects. MHD 23 is one among them and is the Anatomy and Forensic Sciences Equipment Sectional Committee. Committee looks to formulate Indian Standards for medical instruments and equipment used in forensic medicine including storage of human body and viscera at different temperatures, preservatives, study of toxicology, forensic biology and study of biological tissues, firearm evaluations, DNA analysis etc.
