Zebrafish Diabetic Model of Wound Inflammation to Identify the Role of Neutrophil Chemotaxis and IL-8 Expression in Accelerated Wound Healing - GATE Young faculty Research Grant 2015 - Completed

The project was designed to explore the role of Vernonia arborea plant fraction to reduce wound inflammation and accelerate wound healing. The study established diabetic model of adult zebrafish and the model was extended to impaired healing conditions with hyperglycemia. The results showed the potency of the fractions to modify neutrophil migration and IL-8 expression at the wound site and accelerated wound healing.

Neuroprotective effects of a novel phytocompound in adult Zebrafish Traumatic Brain Injury Model (TBI) – Modulating neuroinflammation and neurotransmitter release - GATE Young faculty Research Grant 2020 - Ongoing

The study was designed with an aim to screen and evaluate neuroprotective properties of a novel phytocompound isolated from Vernonia arborea, an indigenous medicinal plant of the Asteraceae family. The plant is known for its traditional use to cure infections and heal wounds. A novel phytocompound from this plant has been isolated, characterized and studied for wound healing potency and antimicrobial activity against wound pathogens.
