Yoga-Based Recovery Intervention on Recovery and Performance Among Professional Indian Rowers

A funded project under Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), India, with an objective to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured, yoga-based recovery intervention in improving physiological, psychological, and cognitive recovery markers among professional Indian rowers, and to establish a validated, integrative recovery framework that is scalable, evidence-informed, and sport-specific.

ECG and Echocardiographic manifestations in young Indian Athletes : A prospective observational study

A funded project under INDIAN COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH, Research Proposal for Major/Minor Research Projects (2024-25)

Abstract: Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) is a potentially devastating phenomenon in sportspersons. Pre-participation medical screening of athletes is essential to identify medical fitness to participate in sports and also to identify the risk factors for injuries. Sudden cardiac arrest on the field of play is uncommonly encountered in sports. Cardiac evaluation done as part of the screening aims to primarily identify abnormalities leading to SCD. This has been recommended to be done at varying frequencies by different international societies. The athletic heart is different from the regular heart due to the various physiological adaptations to training. Established international guidelines have delineated the features of an athlete’s heart and other pathologies. This knowledge is crucial for providing medical fitness.

The electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic (ECHO) evaluation of Indian athletes are grossly under- researched. This study aims to explore the electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic (ECHO) profiles of Indian athletes to identify normal physiological adaptations and pathological conditions. By analyzing this data from a diverse group of athletes across different sports, we can establish common findings among different sports ranges and identify potential causes of sudden cardiac arrest.

Primary objective: To describe the ECG & ECHO findings among Indian athletes and distinguish them as physiologicaland pathological based on international guidelines

Secondary objective: To identify whether the physiological ECG & ECHO variations correlate with the cardiovascular nature of the sport.

Major Research Questions / Hypotheses:

  1. Do Indian athletes have a higher prevalence of pathologicalECG & ECHO variations when compared to international standards?
  2. Are Indian athletes at higher risk of Sudden Cardiac Death?
  3. Can regular cardiac screening mitigate the risk of Sudden Cardiac Death in Indian athletes?
