Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher education and Research has tied up with Akila Bharatha Mahila Seva Samaja (ABMSS) to give free treatment for poor children born with facial deformities like cleft lip/palate and other congenital facial malformations. All treatments will be done in Sri Ramachandra Medical College hospital.

About one in 700 children born in India have cleft lip/palate and if left unattended can cause serious problems for the child with growth, speech, lack of formal school education and a normal social life. Multiple surgeries may be required at various stages of life to ensure successful outcome in these children. Surgery for cleft lip should be done at a very early stage to improve feeding and social acceptance.

For this purpose SRIHER conducts field level camps in villages in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with the help of NGOs to identify patient beneficiaries and provide continued aftercare said Dr. J. Naveen Kumar, HoD, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery who is leading a team of doctors and paramedics providing cleft care. Over the last 2 decades, Sri Ramachandra Hospital has provided comprehensive treatment for over 20,000 patients including surgery, orthodontics, paedodontics, ENT, speech, language and hearing pathologies that affect these children, he added.
