SRIHER Trains Young Scientists in Advanced Biomaterials and Preclinical Research

Posted by SRIHER on 11 April 2026 in Press Release

– Free Hands-on pre-clinical research training for every researcher

– Training at GLP Accredited laboratory (SRIHER)

Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research organised three-day free hands-on training programme on “Advanced Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering: Multiscale Animal Models for Translational Regeneration” from March 25 to 27, 2026. The programme was funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Government of India.

The training programme was organized by the Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Technology, in association with the Centre for Toxicology and Developmental Research. 23 young scientists and research scholars from across India were selected to participate in this specialized programme at no cost

The training also sensitised young researchers to ethical standards in animal handling, with emphasis on minimizing stress, preventing pain, and ensuring humane care during preclinical research.

The animal house at SRIHER has been upgraded into a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)-accredited laboratory to support postgraduates and research scholars in developing high-quality research projects. Notably, SRIHER is the only medical university in the country to have maintained GLP accreditation for the past three and a half years, with a full inspection conducted every three years and periodical surveillance audits. On a global scale, only a few medical institutions possess GLP-accredited toxicology facilities—one in Germany, one in Malaysia, and SRIHER in India—making it one of just three such institutions worldwide.

The programme aimed to introduce participants to recent advances in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine through expert lectures and hands-on preclinical training. It highlighted the importance of preclinical evaluation using animal models before any newly developed biomaterial that can be considered for human clinical trials.

Senior experts from leading national and international institutions delivered lectures and practical training sessions on preclinical analysis. The programme provided valuable exposure to young researchers, faculty members, and scholars, thereby strengthening their scientific knowledge and preclinical skills.

Leading experts including Dr. B. Arumugam, Assistant Professor in Research, Harvard Medical School, USA and Dr. Swathi Sudhakar, Assistant Professor, IIT Madras, India delivered lectures during the workshop.

Ms. Samyuktha Venkataachalam, Trustee, Sri Ramachandra Educational & Health Trust, Dr. P. Venkatachalam, Dean Research, Dr. S. Vimal Raj, Associate Professor, Dept. of Biotechnolgy, Dr. V. Gayathri, Head, Test Facility, Centre for Toxicology and Developmental Research were participated in the event.
