Workshop on Solid Waste Management
Chennai, 30th April 2026
Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Public Health conducted a hands-on “Segregation for Sustainability Workshop” on solid waste segregation for support staff at Chennai Public School Global, Anna Nagar recently. An insightful thought-provoking oration was given by experts from Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Public Health, Industrial Waste Management Association (IWMA) and TESS-AMM India Pvt. Ltd. This program aimed to empower those on the frontline of school campus maintenance to ensure a safe, clean sustainable environment for all students and faculty members.
With the enforcement of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026, urban waste management shifts to mandatory source segregation at the household and workplace levels. Due to minimal availability of centralized secondary segregation infrastructure, residents must now utilize a four-bin system: Green (Wet), Blue (Dry), Red (Sanitary), and Black (Special Care).
This type of segregation method ensures safe handling and resource recovery. The Green Bin is for organic wet waste (food scraps) for composting. The Blue Bin is for dry recyclables (plastic, paper, metal). The Red Bin is dedicated to sanitary waste (masks, diapers, pads, condoms) to contain infections and the Black Bin (Special Care) is for hazardous waste (batteries, chemicals) to prevent toxic chemicals leaching into groundwater.
