Perform a comprehensive assessment of neonate and analyse neonatal health problems scientifically, taking into account the biological basis as well as the socio-behavioral epidemiology of perinatal neonatal disease, and advise and implement strategies aimed at prevention of neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Apply knowledge and skill to diagnose and manage acute illness in neonates in out-patient, in-patient; and home or community setting
Provide primary, secondary and tertiary care to all newborn infants including intensive care of the highest standard to the critically sick and the very low birth weight neonates using advanced therapeutic and supportive modalities and skills.
Plan transfer of sick neonate from different health care setting
Implement a comprehensive follow up and early intervention program for the ‘at risk’ newborn infants, and plan, counsel and advice rehabilitation of the neuro developmentally challenged infants.
Plan and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for neonates with complex illness.
Take rational decisions in the face of ethical dilemmas in neonatal-perinatal practice.
Exhibit communication skills of a high order and demonstrate compassionate attributes befitting a caring neonatologist.
Exercise empathy and maintain professional integrity, honesty and high ethical standards with a caring attitude.
Develop skills of teaching to become a motivated ‘teacher’ keen to share knowledge and skills with a colleague or a junior or any learner and develop learning resource materials for them.
Plan, establish and manage level II and level III neonatal units independently.
Use and maintain the essential neonatal equipment and keep abreast with advances in newborn care technology.
Organize newborn care in the community and at the secondary level of health system, and play the assigned role in the national programmes aimed at the health of mothers and their infants.
Work as a productive member of the interdisciplinary team consisting of obstetricians, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, and other doctors, nurses, and grassroots functionaries providing care to the pregnant mother, the fetus and the newborn in any setting of health care system.
Demonstrate competence in basic research methodology, ethical principles of research, comprehensive scrutiny of medical literature and interest in basic or clinical research with the aim of publishing the work and presenting the work at scientific forums.
Lead development of quality improvement projects & develop standard care practices/ protocols for the unit.
Undertake audit related to patient care, morbidity and mortality, use information technology tools and carry out clinical research.
Seek and analyze new literature and information on neonatology, update the concepts, and practice evidence-based neonatology.
