M.Sc. Human Genetics

Knowledge:
Demonstrate a broad theoretical and applied grounding in cell biology, biochemistry, biostatistics, genomics as well as a core of medically- related genetic courses selected to provide knowledge of human biology in health and disease, through periodic formative and summative assessments.

Skills:
Acquire abilities to operate safely in a laboratory setting, use laboratory equipment, set up and perform experiments, interpret results and identify potential problems encountered during the experiment, through periodically assessed hands-on practical sessions and record entries.

Critical Thinking:
Develop the ability to perform critical evaluation of published scientific papers as well as systematic and critical review of appropriate and relevant information through a combination of seminars, tutorials, presentations and journal clubs.

Research:
Hone the competence to conduct publication standard research, to present research plans and results to an audience, including preparation of research proposals and manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, adherence to ethical guidelines through submissions and plagiarism checks and acquire effective communication skills through oral and poster presentations.

Healthcare:
Describe genetics in medical practice including recognizing congenital anomalies and syndromes, risk assessment and genetic counseling, genetic testing and screening, and plans for management and treatment assessed through clinical rotations and internships.
