Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research organized a seminar on ‘Go with the Gut’ yesterday. It was inaugurated by Dr. Palaniappan Manickam (Dr. Pal), Consultant Gastroenterologist, USA.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that a leaky gut is required to absorb the nutrients from our food. However, too much leakiness may allow toxins, bacteria, and undigested particles to enter the bloodstream, which may cause constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain. He emphasized that the intake of fiber-rich food can help cure leaky gut, with a recommended daily intake of 25 grams of fiber.

Dr. Pal also highlighted that one of the most important factors for improving gut bacteria is food. He advised that our diet should be rich in whole foods, low in ultra-processed foods, and include increased exposure to non-pathogenic microbes.

He stressed the importance of understanding the mysteries of gut health, the gut-brain axis, and how our lifestyles are silently disrupting our microbial balance. “Your gut is your second brain, and treating it with care is key to mind-body wellness,” he added. From mood swings to mental clarity, immunity to inflammation, everything is connected to what’s happening in your belly.

The seminar was organized by the Department of Mind-Body Medicine and Lifestyle Sciences and the Department of Clinical Nutrition. More than 500 students, faculty members, and staff participated in this event.
